Marco Island's history spans from Calusa Indian settlement and shell mound construction around 4000 BC to the 1870s arrival of pioneers like William Thomas Collier, who founded the village of Marco. Fort Myers was named for Colonel Abraham C. Naples, Florida, was founded in the 1880s by Kentuckians Walter N. Haldeman and General John Stuart Williams, who were drawn to the area's mild climate and abundant fishing.
